The social media company that owns Snapchat has removed filters that applied images of sacred Māori tattoos to users’ faces, after the discovery of the culturally offensive filters on social media apps provoked an outcry in New Zealand. An investigation by Radio New Zealand revealed filters featuring tā moko tattoos have proliferated on social media apps such as Instagram and Snapchat. Tā moko represent the Māori genealogy of the wearer, and are a taonga, or treasure, for New Zealand’s Indigenous people. The filters prompted renewed questions about the treatment of sacred cultural artefacts on tech platforms, and debate about whether they should receive bolstered legal protections in New Zealand. The Guardian viewed at least 10 such filters on Instagram at the time of publication, all with names that included “Māori” or “moko”, that were created by users of the platform. Meta, which owns Instagram, did not respond to a request for comment. Snap, which owns Snapchat, told the Guardian it had removed one such filter – called a Lens – from its platform, along with a duplicate, after a New Zealand-based reporter raised concerns from the Māori community about the tools. “We encourage our community to create Lenses that are inclusive and any shared on Snapchat must comply with our community guidelines,” the company told the Guardian in an unattributed statement. “These are clear that we prohibit content that demeans, defames, or promotes discrimination.” Tā moko are only intended for Māori. sob," the 43-year-old resident said, her voice trembling with emotion. On Tuesday, she was among a crowd of residents receiving food parcels from a van at the same square where the Ukrainian flag was dramatically hoisted last week in one of the first images of Ukraine's extraordinary northeastern counteroffensive. read more Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.comRegister The town - which had a population of 27,000 before the war - is one of a chain of key urban outposts that Ukraine has recaptured over the last week after a sudden collapse of one of Russia's principal front lines. On Tuesday, the streets around Balakliia's main square were eerily quiet. The Ukrainian flag flew above a statue of national poet Taras Shevchenko in front of the regional government building. A short walk away, regional police officers led reporters to the burial place of two people. The bodies had been exhumed and were laid out on the grass in open body bags. The two men, they said, were civilians who had been shot dead at a checkpoint in the town on Sept. 6 when the town was still under Russian control. Locals had buried them there because they had nowhere else to do so. At the site of the exhumed grave, Valentyna, the distressed mother of one of the dead men, 49-year-old Petro, cursed the war and Russian President Vladimir Putin. we tried to walk around less, so they'd see us less," said Tetiana Sinovaz. She said they had listened from hiding to the ferocious fighting to liberate the village and had been astonished to find many buildings still standing when they emerged, although the school that the Russians had made their base was destroyed. "We thought there'd be no village left. We came out and it was all there!" she said. Nadia Khvostok, 76, said she and fellow villagers in Verbivka had met arriving soldiers with "tears in our eyes". "We couldn't have been happier. My grandchildren spent two and a half months in the cellar. When the corner of the house was torn off, the children began to shudder and stutter." The children had since left with her daughter, she said, to an unknown destination. In the rubble of the village school, Kharkiv regional Governor Oleh Synehubov told reporters they were trying to register and document evidence of war crimes. "We have found some places of the burial of civilians. We are continuing with the process of exhumation. So far we know of at least five people, but unfortunately this is not the end, believe me," he said. “Man, that’s a great title!” And it is! Did you come up with it? JT: Well, thank you very much. Means a great deal! It is my title. I assumed the publisher would want to change it, but they obviously liked it as well. It all came from the fact that I don’t feel like a “rockstar.” That word both makes me gag. It is better suited for an abhorrent energy drink or to be used by a guy in an Affliction shirt at a topless bar. I’m just a dorky dad with bad tattoos. I definitely do not rock. And the book itself is the antithesis to a rock 'n' roll memoir. It’s not chock-full of stories about snorting meth off an exposed boob on a recording console. It’s mostly about my screwed-up brain, which also doesn’t “rock.” FP: That was a surprise to me upon reading this, because so many people see you and the band in this very specific, successful way due to having such a remarkable career, so it’s assumed that a certain type of “rockstar” lifestyle follows this kind of image. And this book isn’t just about your career with Fall Out Boy, but also your childhood, your complicated relationship with your mother, anti-Semitism you experienced moving from place to place did anything about writing your story surprise you once you began? JT: Yeah, the perception about us is different than the reality. Lots of assumptions. We’re pretty low-key guys and don’t actively participate in... .

which I think is so important to read about and discuss in general. Was this a challenge to write, or was it more therapeutic? JT: Yeah, I am not good at holding back, haha. I suppose if the worst thing I have to say about my band is that I didn’t enjoy the making and release of one album, then I didn’t really go that hard. But, regarding the honesty surrounding my depression, my anxiety, my mood disorder it was both a challenge and therapy. The challenge was finding the words to describe certain ethereal chemically based feelings and experiences that I had yet to verbalize. But once I found those words, the expression worked as a release to a pressure valve. I mentioned approaching this book like journaling, which people always say is good for the ol’ bad brain. And this sort of worked like that. Plus, there’s the notion, the inkling of a thought that maybe, just maybe, sharing what’s happening inside my mind will make others with equally complicated brains feel less alone in the world. FP: I do truly and whole-heartedly think you accomplish that. At least, those were my feelings after reading. A lot of the time, it is hard to verbalize, and I really appreciated your candor. Also, your sense of humor is so great, and your voice in particular shines. Is there a specific section that was your favorite to write? JT: Well, thanks! I suppose two decades of being a mental patient... .

the book, you discuss achieving a worldwide level of success and how relevance is connected to that. It’s very insightful. I wondered if you had specific advice for other artists those who are just starting out or those who are still going for it? JT: I wouldn’t know how to advise new artists in a 2022 landscape. It’s SO different than 22 years ago when we started. It legitimately frightens me. Too much online all the time. Things were not totally internet dependent then. We sold physical records. Nielsen Soundscan mattered. We’re dinosaurs. Old hounds. Put us down, please! That being said, I never got into the music thing with the intention to succeed. I did it because I loved it. I still do, it’s just very different when it’s a career. But I’d advise not going into it expecting a career. That’s surface level. Everyone will know you have a vapid angle. Make music for the sake of enjoyment. Make what you like. Don’t overthink it. Have fun. And maybe, if it’s really good, people will be drawn to it. Not just because of the quality, but because of your authenticity. Because you’re doing it for the sake of the act, not to fulfill some sort of career ambition. FP: Wow, yes. I love this advice. You said it perfectly! To pivot just a bit, can you talk a little bit about the cover? JT: Ah, the cover. That’s me in the front, clearly over it. I’m often over... .

from prosecutors and a fire-and-brimstone statement on behalf of Kelly’s former business manager. Prosecutors at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse started by reminding jurors of their strongest evidence against the singer: The multiple videos they viewed showing Kelly sexually abusing his 14-year-old goddaughter, “Jane.” Advertisement “Kelly and his team, they did their level best … to cover up the fact that Robert Kelly, R. Kelly the R&B superstar, is actually a sexual predator. They did their best, but in the end, they failed,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Pozolo said in the packed ceremonial courtroom. “We are here today because those tapes that they concealed for 20 years are no longer their secret. You have seen the tapes. You have seen what Kelly did to Jane.” Advertisement Meanwhile, the attorney for Kelly’s co-defendant, Derrel McDavid, told jurors in his closing argument that the prosecution was riddled with reasonable doubt and based on untrustworthy witnesses and that McDavid had no way of knowing whether Kelly was really sexually abusing minors. “The man didn’t know,” Beau Brindley said. “They’ve got nothing! ... Their case can’t be trusted.” During a recess after Brindley concluded his arguments Monday afternoon, one of the jurors reported she was having a panic attack and was excused from the panel. The juror, a white woman who works for a public library, told courtroom personnel during a break that she “doesn’t think she can go on one minute more” and that waiting overnight would not help, U.S. District Judge Harry... .

Van Allen, a sometime girlfriend of Kelly’s, testified she took a tape from Kelly’s gym bag that depicted her and Kelly with an underage “Jane” and then Kelly’s team offered her hundreds of thousands of dollars to get it back. Her shame and pain for having had sexual contact with Jane were evident in her tearful testimony from the stand, prosecutors said. “Is that the demeanor of someone who wants to be here?” Pozolo asked jurors. “Is that the demeanor of someone seeking money and fame?” Advertisement The tape purportedly showing Van Allen, Kelly and Jane has not been shown to jurors. The defense has said that’s because it does not exist, and that Kelly’s team in fact was paying to retrieve a sex tape showing Kelly’s wife.

Advertisement Brindley chose to abandon the lectern for his arguments, and instead stood directly in front of the jury, walking back and forth with a microphone pinned to his lapel. The microphone seemed superfluous, given that Brindley spoke at top volume for most of his presentation. He argued in the cadence of a preacher, waving his hands and thrusting his fingers in the air to emphasize certain things. He was accompanied by a brightly colored slideshow that flashed his main points on the screen, often in huge white text on red and yellow backgrounds: “That story is just plain stupid,” one slide stated about Freeman. And on a subsequent slide, just one giant word: “Ridiculous.” Brindley had particular scorn for the testimony of Freeman, the one-time merchandiser for Kelly’s tours whom he blasted as a “talentless tactless T-shirt man.” Brindley said Freeman’s testimony about busting into a Georgia home “like Shaft” to recover a sex tape was “just plain stupid.” “Like (Freeman) if you want, but you can’t believe him because he didn’t act like an honest person and his.
