the birth of a child, or a marriage. And then there are others, clients who just pop in on the way to the grocery store. “Some people don’t care what design they get,” said owner James Barbosa. “They just want a tattoo. Sometimes they come in and say they want something small right now, and will come back for something larger when they have more time. I think some people just like the feel of the tattoo needle.” He and his wife, Raina, began offering tattooing and body piercing services on August 19. But almost as soon as the doors were open at Inksmith, the phone started ringing. “We were hoping to have time to prep, but people were asking to come the next day,” Mr Barbosa said. So far, customers have ranged from a 65-year-old, to a 16-year-old who brought his mother because he needed her blessing. The couple hired Jerric Miraflores, a licensed tattoo artist from the Philippines, to do the actual tattooing work. Mr Miraflores has more than a decade of experience in the industry, and has won awards for his hyperrealistic tattoos. “The hardest thing about doing a tattoo is the designing,” he said. “You must be sure of the client’s design, because it will be on their skin for ever. I make sure that with every design I do, the client is happy.” Tattoo work done by Jerric Miraflores, the artist at the new Inksmith Tattoo Studio in Hamilton (Photograph by Jessie Moniz Hardy) Mr... https://www.pinterest.com/alfngbs/pen-tattoos/.

"Our focus is that we want to understand the science better," Swierk told ABC News, "We want to empower artists and consumers to be knowledgeable." STPCK PHOTO/Getty Images The team of researchers uses multiple techniques to detect the particle size and molecular composition of tattoo pigments, using highly specialized machines that can analyze the inks at a molecular level. "The most surprising thing we found is just how much inaccuracy there is," Swierk said. "I won't say that it's inaccurate for every single manufacturer … but certainly, we've looked at a pretty significant subset, and we're finding a recurring issue of incorrect labeling." The team has been studying both carrier solutions – which Swierk said is the liquid portion that carries the pigment, typically made out of a mix of alcohol and water – and pigments. at Thorns Tattoo Studio in Berkeley. (Beth LaBerge/KQED) Pen: Perusing your Instagram, I see that you have a lot of influence from like, nature. What's your connection to flowers? Sophia: I've been a florist for ten years now. Nope! Twelve years. Oh, time is a wild thing! I just have an affinity for plants and flowers and I'm from the Bay I grew up like hiking, backpacking all around California. I get all my color work done with the flower side of things, so I don't really bring it into like tattoos or like my art. Working with flowers has taught me everything that I know about design and composition. It's just sculptural, but it's also ephemeral. Like, it doesn't last. You're working with something that is temporary, and I'll draw that parallel with tattoos pretty often. Sophia Blum, also known as Pio Poke, tattoos a client at Thorns Tattoo Studio in Berkeley on September 1, 2022. (Beth LaBerge/KQED) Pen: You said something that stuck with me: Tattoos essentially don't last forever. When I think of tattoos, I think like, that's probably the most permanent form of art that I can think of what lasts longer than tattoos, you know? And so why? Why are they impermanent? Sophia: To me, I think of it in the opposite sense. Most art lasts so much longer than your body does. Like a painting lasts for hundreds of years.
