Ayan Mukerji’s Bollywood action fantasy “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva” was one of the leading films at the global box office over the weekend, grossing $28.2 million, according to its producers, Disney’s Star Studios India and Dharma Productions. The film released in India across 5,019 screens and debuted at No. 1 with a three-day weekend of $18.9 million. The film’s overseas screen count was 3,894. More from Variety In the U.S., where the film is distributed by Disney, it released in 810 theaters and debuted at No. 2 with $4.4 million. However, the film needs to sustain its momentum to break even, with its budget approximately $51 million. “Brahmāstra: Part One,” the first of a planned trilogy, takes place in modern-day India and follows Shiva (Ranbir Kapoor) a young man on the brink of an epic love, with a girl named Isha (Alia Bhatt). But their world is turned upside down when Shiva learns that he has a mysterious connection to a secret society called Brahmānsh. In Variety’s review, Courtney Howard called the movie “special and innovative,” as well as a “wildly entertaining jump start to a planned trilogy – touted as Bollywood’s first original cinematic universe, the ‘Astraverse.’” The film was released in 2D, 3D and Imax 3D in the Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada languages. The movie also experiences spotty pacing issues, most noticeably when it returns from intermission, overdosing on exposition at times, seeing as how the characters twice summarize what’s happened. Yet in Mukerji’s capable, crafty hands, it’s never a dull ride. There are few wasted moments, as all the details lay the groundwork for this chapter as well as the two upcoming sequels, presumed to have further payoff. Character development doesn’t follow the traditional hero’s journey arc. Rather, the film uses that model as the departure point for a unique twist on the expected, innovating and updating it. It’s an enlightened way to include Isha’s agency and arc, which runs complementary to Shiva’s. The pair are archetypal heroes who are fundamentally good, kind souls with heartwarming values that reflect narrative themes of sacrifice, truth and love. These character qualities are always at the forefront of the action, even before the supernatural elements occur. Orchestrating this subtly is a feat given the film’s bombastic, over-the-top nature. Leads Kapoor and Bhatt have an excess of charm and style that leaps off the screen and grabs your heart. Kapoor’s charisma elevates the material’s sporadically hokey dialogue. Bhatt is luminescent, playing both spitfire and sweetheart with gusto and grace. They are at their most endearing when vulnerable. During a few sequences, whether they’re running over rooftops during fireworks or being sprinkled with marigold... .

An orphan who now works as a DJ, Shiva (Ranbir Kapoor), meets and aggressively (but politely) courts a comparatively upper-crust British tourist Isha (Alia Bhatt). Impressing a girl by taking her to a birthday party at the orphanage for which you volunteer, and thus filled with kids who think you’re the very best, is a baller move. They hit it off until Shiva gets distracted by exposition flashbacks/visions that point toward another superhero (Anish Shetty) seemingly marked for murder. While I enjoyed the comparatively small-scale chase/fight that follows, it’s about where the movie gets lost in its continuity. Ayan Mukerji’s first entry in the Astraverse is focused on lore and how its various characters fit into a broader puzzle and a larger narrative. However, the heroes and villains get little in the way of development beyond generic character types. We meet a small group of superheroes with frankly interchangeable powers, with Amitabh Bachchan showing up to offer gravitas and endless exposition. He’s supposed to be Nicky Fury or Obi-Wan Kenobi. Still, he comes off as this film’s Dr. Jekyll, constantly repeating the same critical bits of lore and mythology until the audience can recite them by... .
