A Florida trucker was charged with the 2006 cold case murder of a 24-year-old woman in Maryland weeks after he was arrested for the 1996 killing of a 29-year-old woman in Michigan, authorities announced. Garry Artman, 64, of White Springs, Florida, was linked to both slayings by DNA evidence.  The body of Dusty Myriah Shuck, 24, was found May 4, 2006, dumped on the shoulder of the I-70 freeway in Frederick County, Maryland. She had been stabbed to death. With no cameras or witnesses in the area, police had little to go on besides two dragon tattoos on the victim's back, with “Gypsy Rose” written beneath them. A check of local truck stops, tattoo parlors, and missing person databases resulted in no significant leads. Two more years passed by until a search of the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) came up with a DNA match between an unsolved 1996 murder in Michigan and another in Maryland that occurred a decade later. There still was one problem, no profile yet that matched the DNA. That was until this past August, when Michigan detectives arrested Artman in Mississippi. They got a warrant to collect his DNA which later matched the profile linked to both unsolved murders. Maryland State Police also received a DNA swab, confirming the match. investigation remained open.  On Aug. 17, an investigator with Maryland State Police received a phone call from a detective with the Kent County Sheriff’s Office in Michigan, where they had identified Garry Artman of White Springs, Florida, as a suspect.  The Kent County Sheriff’s Office arrested Artman in Mississippi, and he was extradited to Michigan. Police obtained a search warrant to collect his DNA and took it to the Michigan State Police Lab.  On Aug. 18, the Michigan State Police Crime Lab confirmed Artman’s DNA matched the unknown 1996 DNA profile and the 2006 homicide’s DNA profile.
